The Doorway of Welcome

Ephesians 2:13-22

For now in Christ Jesus we all are brought near
to the Doorway of Welcome. No tribe holds sway here.
For God’s law is established not in rules or commands
But in healing humanity. God’s house in God’s hands.
 
Christ draws us together, putting rancor to death
Becoming one body that He fills with breath
For we, who were far off, are received as we come
No longer strangers, but members, each one.
 
Yet not in division, but as one body, we
Embrace our redemption through God’s unity
With all of creation, sublime sanctity
In Jesus, our differences are affinities.
 
For God’s Spirit grants access, makes us holy and whole
God joins us together, one temple, one soul
This is the marriage that God fashions so well
A Covenant People in a space where God dwells.
 
Preacher and Prophet, and citizen-saint
All bring their witness with song, word, and paint
The Founder’s foundation, the Annointed One’s Way
The Doorway is Welcome. Come enter and stay.

The text is based on Ephesians 2: 11-22 and is conceived as a focus for the lectionary readings on unity in the midst of conflict. It also makes a fine wedding solo and hymn.
