Samaritan

Samaritan

(The Road to Jericho)

Parable based on:                                                                    Lyrics & Music by John Ridgway Walker

  • Luke 10:25-37
  • & Deuteronomy 6:5
  • Commentary based on Psalm 82: 2-4 & 8

 Parable

Verse 1. “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus answered him, “What is written in the law?  What do you read there?”
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul;
With all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.”

Verse 2. “Well, yes!  That’s right!”, said Jesus. “Just do this and you will live.”
“But who then is my neighbor?” asked the man. Jesus read the man and said:
“Let me tell you a story about a traveller to Jericho
who was beaten and robbed and left there to his fate..

Verse 3.A temple priest also passed that way, but when he saw the man,
he didn’t stop; he crossed the road instead (Leave him for someone else)
Likewise, a temple keeper also passed him by
as he hurried to the temple undefiled

Commentary 1.
How long will we act unjustly by ignoring what we see
and leaving the victim to pick up the pieces while we go our way carefree?
Let us rise to rescue the needy and uphold the cause of the aggrieved;
So shall we build the walls of God’s Kingdom by providing for their need
Parable
Verse 4. Deepening the story by raising up one so despised
From across the border, humanity on a journey (Learn it from someone else)
Who should come along that day and know the right thing to do?
A Samaritan who wasn’t even from there.

Commentary 2.
 Bringing justice to the poor and orphaned. Upholding the rights of the distressed.
To rescue the helpless and needy, and deliver them from the grip of evil’s grasp.
Rise up, O God, and judge the earth, for the nations belong to you”.
May the One who presides o’er the courts of heaven, bring justice through our courts too.

“How long will we judge unjustly by favoring the powerful hands
that shape their reign by extending dominion over the common man?
Let us rise to rescue the needy and uphold the cause of the weak;
So shall we claim the heart of God’s Kingdom for the children of the meek.

Parable
Verse 5. So, who then is our neighbor on the road to Jericho?
Whomever God might send us on that day! (A neighbor unlike yourself)
To them then, be that neighbor, their guardian, guide, and stay
For we’ll never know our neighbor if we look the other way.

Commentary 3.
 “How long will we act unjustly by ignoring what we see
 leaving the victim to pick up the pieces while we go on our way carefree.
Let us rise to rescue the needy and uphold the cause of the aggrieved;
So shall we build the walls of God’s Kingdom by providing for their need

Moral
