Band

Testimonial

"The Richland Center High School Band recently celebrated it's 100th Anniversary
, making the Richland Center Band the oldest continuous public school Band in the nation.  We were very excited that John Ridgway Walker would commemorate this special event by composing a piece for the Alumni & High School Concert Band.    Mr. Walker spent a great deal of time investigating our current band and community. He based his piece on Wisconsin Historical Society research and a newspaper article published in 1930 by the Milwaukee Journal that discussed an old Indian legend originating about 10 miles from our High School building.

Mr. Walker composed an incredible work that was relevant to our students, school, community, and even incorporated creative ideas from our music theory class.  Mr. Walker and I communicated on a regular basis from the conception to the completion of this project.  The "Legend of the Singing Cave"
received a standing ovation, with many members of the audience brought to tears at the conclusion of our premier.

I highly recommend Mr. Walker for groups interested in commissioning a work for your ensemble.  There was, indeed, magic in the air that evening.   As a Music Educator, this is truly an experience that I will never forget".

The Legend of Singing Cave

For Concert Band

Nowhere along the magnificent beauty of its course does the Wisconsin river take on an atmosphere so mysterious, so legendary, so highly interesting as it does where its broad curves swing in to touch the feet of the northern bluffs near the hamlet of Gotham in Richland county.

And it is there that the fabric of mystery has been woven by Indian legend...
